**Submission Statement:** Under Modi, India has attempted to position itself as an “upcoming superpower”, a major global player with economic and political clout. However, the Iran conflict has revealed vulnerabilities in India’s foreign capacity. As a net importer of fuel, India is vulnerable to supply shocks from the Hormuz closure. And it hasn’t shown the geopolitical clout to leverage a deal, unlike its rival Pakistan (who has emerged as the lead mediator). Needing fuel, India has drawn closer to Russia, which has also served to further alienate it from the U.S, who has slapped India with the highest tariffs (50%!). The limits of Indian soft power and economic capacity are being stripped back as Hormuz remains in a vice and negotiations largely sideline India.
