This is an article from shortly after the assassination attempt against Trump in Pennsylvania in 2024, but it’s still relevant today. Contrary to certain figures in the media claiming that all this is because of Democratic rhetoric around Trump (rhetoric which I should note is entirely accurate), this argues that political violence is a natural (but not good) outcome of any existential conflict between groups that cannot be resolved through an acceptable compromise. Heightened rhetoric is a symptom rather than a cause of this division. Unfortunately, this is the political environment we will be in for the foreseeable future, unless of course one side is victorious or both sides are exhausted.
