The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is a major commuter railroad for NYC. This morning, its employees have decided to strike because of bargaining disagreements. It's bad now, but if it lasts until the work week it'll be really annoying.
This actually could be blamed on the Trump Admin, funnily enough. Last year, the National Mediation Board that adjudicates union disputes for railroads freed the union members from constraints that would have prevented them from striking, which Hochul calls out in the article.
So, I'm one of the users least likely to poo-poo unions on the sub. I'm a daughter and granddaughter of steel workers ✊. The employees are already getting a fairly large retroactive wage increase, as are other transit unions. I get it, as costs have increased a ton and without the union pressure public employee wages can lag. That said, it's a big fucking deal to shut down a major service, and I don't have a ton of sympathy for the striking employees.
Sub might be interested in poo-pooing public employee unions (just a guess) as well as discussing transit services and operations, or maybe the fascinating if deeply crazy topic of railroad law in the US?

Man the Long Island Expressway was already a mess. Can’t imagine it now.
The MEDIAN salary for a long island rail worker is $131,000. This is absurd.
People who treat every union like they’re all Harlan County coal miners is mainly going off vibes.
