Prosecutors on Dec. 18 sought a life sentence for the man accused of assassinating former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, calling the crime an “unprecedented case in postwar history” that had an immense impact on society.
The suspect, Tetsuya Yamagami, 45, has admitted to fatally shooting Abe in during an election campaign in Nara in July 2022.
Yamagami said he attacked Abe over his connections to the former Unification Church. He said his mother’s repeated donations to the religious organization ruined his family and led to his life in poverty.

It’s kinda funny that in a country that can and does apply the death penalty, they aren’t seeking it for the most high profile assassination of the 21st century
Tetsuya Yamagami’s assassination of Shinzo Abe had a powerful impact on Asia-pacific politics. It not only destroyed the credibility of LDP in Japan leading to the cracks showing LDP-dominated 1955 system but also triggered the worst constitutional crisis of 1987 system of Korea.
Unification Church intensified the collusion with Yoon Suk-yoel to smuggle out their ill-gotten from Japan through “Cambodia ODA project” and migrate their Japanese followers to Korea after Abe got assassinated. This was aimed to steal as much they can from Japanese branch before it got dissolved and the assets frozen. During this process, Yoon’s wife received luxury handbags from Moonies through the mediation of shamans. When authorities closed on these shamans over handbag scandals…Yoon declared martial law to protect his wife.
