Birth control pills, specifically combined oral contraceptives (COCs), are classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization (WHO). This means there’s sufficient evidence that COCs can cause cancer in humans, particularly increasing the risk of breast, cervical, and liver cancers. However, it’s essential to consider the overall risk-benefit profile, as COCs also provide protective effects against endometrial, ovarian, and colorectal cancers

The classification is based on research indicating:
    – *Increased Risk*: Breast cancer risk increases during COC use, returning to baseline approximately 10 years after discontinuation.
    – *Cervical Cancer*: Risk increases with duration of COC use, particularly with ≥5 years of use.
    – *Liver Cancer*: Some studies suggest an increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma.

    Conversely, COCs offer benefits like:
    – *Reduced Risk*: Endometrial, ovarian, and colorectal cancers.
    – *Regulated Menstrual Cycles*: Relief from symptoms like cramps and bleeding.

  2. Yeah… pretty much all pharmaceuticals have bad side effects. I just think it’s disgusting how so many doctors offer birth control as a ‘cure all’ for women despite how bad it is for your body to be on it for long amounts of time. But some people don’t have much of a choice, sadly.

  3. Literally everything, or most of it, is designed to kill you. But there’s also cases of people abusing their body and living forever and then people who take care of themselves diligently and dying young.

This claim is misleading. The WHO’s cancer agency (IARC) classified combined oral contraceptives as Group 1 carcinogens back in 2005, not “now.”

“Group 1” simply means there is evidence that something *can* cause cancer in some circumstances; it does not measure how big the risk is. Alcohol and processed meat are in the same category.

The pill slightly increases the risk of breast and cervical cancer while in use, but it also reduces the risk of ovarian and endometrial cancers, which is why major medical bodies still consider it safe for most women.
