Submission statement: AI is increasingly a focus of politics in the U.S. (and everyone else) as is a growing populist anti-AI sentiment, which sees AI as a tool of the elite to oppress the masses. This is reflected in statements by politicians, and also in the recent attacks against Sam Altman. The article relates to this sub’s interest in rising populism and how emerging technologies can contribute to it.

It is *very* difficult not to fall into the hole of AI doomerism/populism.
Social media is now just bots wanting to scam you or to post outrage bait, AI keeps being used to push fake narratives and force you to doubt what you see with your own eyes, learning is getting wrecked with AI-created cheating and “Ai-influencers” and tech bros keep doing their out-of-touch babbling bs.

I think the dysfunctional political system in a way makes AI hatred not completely irrational. If you believe AI will take away your job and the economy is not good for finding a new job and that the possibility of the government helping you is low to impossible (cause dysfunction) you can see how one would be anti AI. Of course the premise that AI will take away your job is not so obvious, but it isn’t completely irrational

I hate AI becouse its the biggest fucking scam and is sucking away capital that could be used for things that would still be profitable and make things better.
Its so fucking obvious that “tech” has just been turned into a giant predictive markets of dickheads trying to cash in on “the next apple or google”
Meanwhile these AI companies are run by the biggest fucking grifters and con artists, which, they dont even try to hide.
The sulf suck of the entire “tech industry” proping itself up on circular business deals and investments **WILL** come crashing down becouse there is no profit being made, just billions of investments flowing around a few select companies to apply a vener of “the future is this” to suck up more and more market share and money from things like honest to God manufacturing.
This country could dominate the global markets with high quality manufactured goods (like electric cars for example, or even a broad high-speed rail network) but instead money is funneled into tech on nothing but fomo on the “next big thing” being a fucking chat bot

I am surprised people aren’t talking about the fear if datacenters and environmental impact on water (real or not) that is driving a lot of this sentiment. Obviously the CEOs talk of jobs is terrible but the actual impact of unemployment has actually not been as much as one would expect (though companies are citing AI for any business decisions).
And while companies chase trends (blockchain recently) people are wrong to think that AI is not a genuine new technology that will increase our production significantly.
